Garden City vs Eagle and Boise About an Open Greenbelt!

It is interesting how the City of Garden City continues to ignore the users and surrounding cities requests to be able to use the Garden City portion of the northside greenbelt. Here is a communication I received concerning the City of Eagle requesting an audience with the City Council of Garden City by the Mayor and representative of the City of Eagle. Thank you Gary Segars for making this notice public.

We’ve been in this battle with Garden City since 2007 and occasionally letting you all know that we are not giving up. Well, it appears that the City of Eagle it taking the same position. What follows is a copy of a letter that was unanimously approved by the Eagle City Council and sent to the City of Garden City on October 25th.

Note that the letter says they request a joint Councils’ meeting and including a tour of both the GC bike path and the Eagle Greenbelt. As everyone knows, Eagle does not ban bike riding on their Greenbelt. Isn’t Eagle’s Greenbelt very similar in design and structure to the bike path in Riverside Village?

Re: Garden City Greenbelt

Mayor Evans and Garden City Council:

As you know, the Eagle City Council voted unanimously on September 27, 2011 to support opening bicycle access to the Boise River Greenbelt through Garden City. The current Garden City restriction has a direct and adverse impact on Eagle residents who would like to ride on the Greenbelt from Eagle to or through Garden City.

We appreciate you taking the time to meet with Mayor Reynolds and Councilman Semanko on September 29, 2011 to discuss this issue. Our concerns include safety considerations associated with the current bypass route through your City. The Mayor and Councilman Semanko heard your safety concerns about the suitability of the existing Greenbelt section. There was also a preliminary discussion about some potential solutions.

As a next step in the dialogue between our cities, we would like to request a joint meeting between the City Councils of Eagle and Garden City. We would also welcome a tour of the Greenbelt, both in Garden City and Eagle, to gain a better understanding of the issues.

We look forward to the opportunity to speak together on behalf of the residents of both of our communities regarding this important matter.
Sincerely,
[Eagle Mayor and City Council]”

OK. So let’s see what happens now. Remember the last notice I posted? The meeting was cancelled because the representative from Eagle, Mr Semanko said he would like to speak. See Citizens For An Open Greenbelt and Garden City. If history is to repeat itself, the above proposed meeting will never happen.
